Taking Chances

Did you know there's a National Take a Chance Day?! HA…I’m pretty much living a ‘Take a Chance’ Life! Maybe you feel that way too. Anyway, indulge me and enjoy ABBA's Take a Chance on Me while I share my ‘taking a chance’ story when starting alvöru.

Like most products that come to the market, alvöru came from my own personal need to sleep better when I first started the journey into perimenopause. More than 10 years ago I joined the ranks of the millions of women that suffer with hot flashes and night sweats. It came at me with a vengeance in feeling like I was in a swimming pool every single night. And, I did what we all do…I went in search of a solution on Google! I found some options for sleepwear, but almost 90% of what I found looked like my grandmother would wear it, not a 46-year-old woman! Needing some type of relief, I went ahead and purchased the least matronly looking items and tried them out. Surprisingly I noticed a difference and so began to think how to make the clothing better, not just for me, but for all women that suffer with their body temperature.

Getting to the launch of alvöru definitely took time as I spent several years ‘dabbling’ by finding patterns that I could sew up for myself, talking with some clothing manufacturers about fabric technologies that help with body temperature (sweat) and even going as far as sewing up a few prototypes for girlfriends to try and provide feedback. But…I kept faltering when it came time to TAKE A CHANCE and say “I’m going to do this”. Finally after some changes with my paying job, the opportunity to either TAKE THE CHANCE or shut the door on the idea and move on hit me smack in the face. Nearly 10 years later, I launched alvöru and I’m thrilled to share my passion for my product with other women who suffer like I did (and still do!).

My brand, alvöru, is an apparel line designed for women who want FEMININE, CLASSIC, and COMFORTABLE clothes to balance career and casual while dealing with hormonal fluctuations that cause hot flashes and night sweats. Aside from menopause, many women face challenges of increased body temperature from pregnancy, chemotherapy, various medications and other illness or disease.alvöru utilizes the technology that went into space gloves used by NASA to regulate astronauts’ body temperature using what’s called PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS.  Imagine ice cubes in a drink; as the ice cube changes from solid to liquid, it absorbs heat and cools the drink, keeping your drink at the desired temperature for longer. alvöru clothing works the same way – as the skin gets hot, the heat is absorbed, and as it cools, that heat is released.

Every day I take a chance in putting myself out there with the clothing, my marketing, my stories, my finances, etc. It’s a chance that I’m thrilled to have taken and while harder work than I could have ever imagined, I don’t regret once TAKING A CHANCE. I hope you go out and TAKE A CHANCE on your dream!
